Gaining royal favour and high honours and distinction from an early date, bearers of the Williams name have stamped an indelible mark on the pages of the historical record.
From the diverse worlds of politics and literature to the stage, sport and music, some have achieved fame and others notoriety, with one particularly colourful bearer of the name being Ann Williams, of the Williams family of Mari, near Conwy, North Wales.
Inheriting the property of her brother, Sir Robert Williams, 7th Baronet, in 1745, she became the wealthiest heiress in North Wales – but also acquired a dubious reputation not only because of her extravagant spending but also because she was reputed to have been a mistress of Prince William, Duke of Cumberland, and bore him a son.
The stirring lives and times of bearers of the Williams name are recorded here.
