A name strongly identified from at least the mid-twelfth century with the Lanarkshire area of Lowland Scotland, ‘Weir’ features prominently in the record of the nation’s frequently turbulent history.
Some of the name were to be found on the battlefield, while others were pioneering entrepreneurs whose legacy survives to this day.
Two particular enterprising brothers of the name were James Weir, born in 1841, and his younger brother George.
It was in 1871 that the brothers – descended through their maternal grandmother from Scotland’s national bard Robert Burns – set up a small foundry and machine shop in what was then the small village of Cathcart, near Glasgow.
It was from this humble beginning that the company of G. and J. Weir, later specialising in areas of engineering including pumps and oil pipelines, grew into today’s internationally renowned Weir Group.
From earliest times to the present day, the colourful saga of the Weirs is presented here. Book Dimensions 10 × 0.4 × 14.5 cm
