Ulster, which along with Connacht, Munster and Leinster is one of the four ancient provinces of the Emerald Isle, is the original territory of proud bearers of the McGuigan name.
It was from present day County Tyrone, allied with other clans such as the O’Neills and the O’Donnells that in the late sixteenth century the McGuigans embarked on one of the bloodiest rebellions in the island’s history.
In more peaceful times, Barry McGuigan is the former world featherweight boxing champion born in 1961 in Clones, County Monaghan, and known as ‘The Clones Cyclone’, while his father was the renowned Irish singer Pat McGuigan.
In the world of film, Paul McGuigan is the award-winning Scottish filmmaker whose many credits include the 1999 The Acid House.
Chronicled here is the colourful saga of the McGuigans of both yesteryear and today.
