One illustrious ancestor of the Kellys was a ferocious chieftain who in 1014 fought loyally at the side of the great warrior king Brian Boru against the Vikings in one of Ireland’s most bloody and decisive battles.
Succeeding generations have gone on to achieve international fame and acclaim.
Across the Atlantic from the original Kelly homeland of Ireland, Gene Kelly, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1912, was the actor, singer, dancer, choreographer, director and producer best known as a major star of the silver screen.
Named by the American Film Institute as among the greatest male stars of all time, he is famed to this day for his performance in the 1952 movie Singin’ in The Rain, while his first film role was beside Judy Garland in the 1942 For Me and My Gal.
