Tracing a descent from some of Ireland’s earliest warrior kings, the Griffins of today can boast a truly illustrious heritage.
While some were victims of harsh policies enacted against the native Irish, others battled adversity to make names for themselves not only in the land of their birth but also in other lands.
In architecture Walter Griffin, born in 1876, was the modernist architect and landscape architect credited with pioneering the use of reinforced concrete for homes, the L-shaped floor plan and carports, while in archaeology James Griffin, born in 1905, is recognised as having been one of the most influential archaeologists in North America of the twentieth century.
In the world of contemporary music, James Griffin was the singer, songwriter and guitarist with the 1970s American band Bread, whose international hits include Make it With You and Guitar Man.
Chronicled here is the proud and colourful tale of the Griffins of both yesteryear and today.
