With the defiant motto of “Fortune favours the bold”, the Flahertys were present in the ancient Irish province of Connacht and further north in Ulster from earliest times – while their history is enmeshed with that of that of the Emerald Isle as a whole.

With sword in hand they were ever alert in defence of their proud heritage, often at bitter cost to themselves.

In more peaceful times, and in the world of film, Robert J. Flaherty was the pioneering American filmmaker whose 1922 Nanook of the North was the world’s first commercially successful feature length documentary film, while in the world of contemporary music Stephen Flaherty is the American composer for musical theatre whose 1998 Ragtime was nominated for no less than twelve Tony Awards and won Best Original Score.
