Born in 1773 in Somerset, Thomas Young was the gifted English physicist, physician and Egyptologist who laid the foundations of modern-day Egyptology by breaking the ‘code’ of the mysterious Rosetta Stone – a black basalt stone uncovered by soldiers from Napoleon’s army in 1799 and which proved to hold the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics.
