Although a name that originally referred to those who worked, or ‘wrought, in a diverse range of skilled trades, ‘Wright’ is a surname whose bearers figure prominently in the historical record through much different endeavours and pursuits.
Two of its most famous bearers are the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright, the pioneering American aviators who in 1903 made the world’s first controlled, powered, heavier-than-air flight, while Frank Lloyd Wright was the American architect recognised as ‘the greatest American architect of all time.’
In the murky world of spies, Peter Wright was the British scientist and counter-intelligence officer whose 1985 memoir Spycatcher was the subject of an unsuccessful banning attempt by the authorities who feared it breached the Official Secrets Act.
From earliest times to the present day, the gripping and colourful tale of the Wrights of both yesteryear and today is chronicled here.
