Originally an occupational name for someone involved in the working, or ‘waulking’ of woven cloth to a thickness that would allow the tailoring of garments, ‘Walker’, derived from the Old English ‘wealcare’, features prominently in the historical record from earliest times.

Known as the Defender of Londonderry, the Rev. George Walker, commissioned as a colonel in the army in Ireland of William of Orange, was killed at the battle of the Boyne in 1690, while in the sciences John Walker, born in Stockton-On-Tees, invented the friction match by mixing potash and antimony.

On an infamous note, John Anthony Walker is the former communications specialist for the U.S. Navy who is now serving multiple prison sentences after being uncovered for selling vital secrets to the Soviet Union between 1968 and 1985.

Chronicled here are the lives and times of the Walkers, both of yesteryear and today.
