Bearers of what was originally an occupational name derived from the Old French ‘tailler’, meaning ‘to cut’, as in the cutting of cloth, the Taylors have stamped their mark on the historical record through a richly diverse range of endeavours and pursuits.
Taking to both the air and the water, Sir Geoffrey Ingram Taylor, born in 1886, was the British scientist noted for his pioneering work on aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, while in the realm of historical scholarship A.J.P. Taylor was the celebrated twentieth century historian who’s many best-selling works include his best-selling English History 1914-1945.
On the stage, Elizabeth Taylor was the English-born Hollywood actress who, after making her film debut at the tender age of nine, went on to star in a number of films that include Lassie Come Home, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Cleopatra.
Chronicled here are the colourful lives and times of the Taylors.
