Lieutenant Sir Thomas Mitchell was the early nineteenth century British surveyor and explorer responsible for the surveying and mapping of much of Australia, while taking to the heavens Maria Mitchell was the American astronomer who in 1847 discovered the comet later named in her honour as Miss Mitchell’s Comet.
Born in 1912, Bill Mitchell was the American automobile designer responsible for an iconic range of cars that include the 1949 Cadillac Coup de Ville, while R. J.
Mitchell was the British aeronautical engineer famed for his development of what became the Second World War fighter aircraft the Spitfire.
