A name now far removed from its original descriptive term for someone engaged in the making and repairing of barrels and casks, ‘Cooper’ figures prominently in the historical record.

Born in 1621, Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, created an aristocratic dynasty of the name, with his namesake, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, a leading politician, social reformer and philanthropist.

On the stage, Gary Cooper was the Hollywood actor whose many screen credits include the 1942 Sergeant York, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor, while Tommy Cooper, regarded as one of Britain’s greatest ever comedy acts, was the comedian and magician who died after collapsing on stage in 1984.

In the world of contemporary music, Vincent Damon Furnier is the veteran rock star better known as Alice Cooper – and his tale, along with those of other bearers of the Cooper name is presented here.
