Of Anglo-Saxon roots, ‘Clarke’ features prominently in the historical record, with the unfortunate 80-year-old Elizabeth Clarke the first woman to be persecuted and hanged for witchcraft by the notorious ‘Witchfinder General’ Matthew Hopkins, in Essex in 1645.

In more enlightened times, Arthur C. Clarke was the renowned British science fiction writer, futurist and inventor born in 1917 and who was known, along with Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein as one of the “Big Three” of science fiction.

Chairman of the Interplanetary Society from 1947 to 1950, his many acclaimed works include his 1968 2001: A Space Odyssey, also successfully adapted for a film of the name.

From earliest times to the present day, the colourful tale of the Clarkes is presented here.
