A name that originally stems from the reverence for an early Christian saint, ‘Bennett’ first became popular in the British Isles following the Norman Conquest of 1066, a pivotal moment in history.
Many of the name have stamped their mark on the historical record through a diverse and colourful range of pursuits, including military service, politics, enterprise and the arts.
Born in 1926 in Queens, New York City, Anthony Dominick Benedetto is the American singer of popular music, show tunes and jazz better known as Tony Bennett, while Roy C. Bennett was the famed American songwriter who, along with Sid Tepper, wrote a number of hits for Elvis Presley and much of the music for his films, including Blue Hawaii.
The duo also wrote for other stars, including Tony Bennett and Rosemary Clooney.
