“Justice and courage are invincible” is the proud motto of the Maguires – an Irish clan with roots deeply embedded in the soil of the ancient northern province of Ulster, where they held sway for centuries in what is now present day County Fermanagh.

Defence of their freedoms came at a bloody cost, but ensured them a place in the annals of the Emerald Isle’s turbulent history.

In the murky world of terrorism, the Molly Maguires was the name given to a feared secret organisation that originated in rural Ireland in the eighteenth century and later appeared in the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania in late nineteenth century America.

Along with other secret societies in Ireland such as the Peep O’ Day Boys, the Molly Maguires engaged in violence and sabotage against the unpopular rural ‘reforms’ of landlords that left many families destitute.
