Although popularised as a surname in the British Isles in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066, ‘Lee’ has proud roots that stretch back much further through the dim mists of time.

Featured prominently in the historical record of a number of nations, many of its bearers have gained fame and acclaim through a diverse range of endeavours and pursuits – not least Harper Lee, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird and Tim Berners-Lee, the British computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web.

On an infamous note, John Lee was the nineteenth century English murderer who survived no fewer than three attempts to hang him for his crime.
