Hire Tartan Spotlight - Black Watch
Share
We'll be taking a wee dive into all of our hire tartans over the next few weeks. We start off with one of the Classics... Black Watch.

The Black Watch tartan, also known as the Government tartan, dates back to the early 18th century and is one of the most iconic and enduring tartans in Scottish history. It was originally worn by the Independent Highland Companies, a military force formed in 1725 to police the Highlands and suppress clan unrest following the Jacobite risings. These companies were later organized into the 43rd (later the 42nd) Regiment of Foot in 1739, which came to be known as The Black Watch. The regiment’s dark-coloured tartan—featuring black, dark green, and navy blue—was chosen to reflect its role as a disciplined, neutral force among feuding clans, and to distinguish it from more brightly coloured clan tartans.

Over time, the Black Watch tartan became not only the official pattern of the regiment but also a powerful symbol of Scottish military tradition. Its use expanded beyond the regiment to become a standard "universal" tartan that could be worn by anyone without clan affiliation. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it was adopted widely in both military and civilian dress, contributing to its enduring popularity. Today, the Black Watch tartan remains synonymous with honour, service, and Scottish heritage, and is recognized globally as a classic design steeped in history.

At Kilts Wi Hae, we usually recommend this tartan be paired with one of our Navy or dark blue coloured jackets to reflect the blue tones in the kilt itself. Finish with bottle green accessories to complete the look and pick out the kilts notes of green.

In terms of the sporran, our silver sporran works very well. We have also seen a white sporran and white sock combination paired with the outfit, which gives a more traditional feel. For something more contemporary, a brown sporran and shoes give you a modern twist on this classic outfit.
