With the proud motto of ‘The Lord made’ and crest of an eagle’s head, the Baird clan descend from an ancient Scottish family with original roots in modern-day Peebleshire and Lanarkshire, first coming to prominence during the reign from 1165 to 1214 of William 1, better known to posterity as William the Lion.

Many of the name have achieved high honours and distinction through a colourful range of endeavours and pursuits. One branch of the family who eventually settled in Aberdeenshire served in the trusted and powerful post of hereditary sheriffs of Aberdeen, while towards the end of the seventeenth century John Baird was honoured with a baronetcy.

Born in the Scottish west coast resort of Helensburgh in 1888, John Logie Baird is famed not only as the inventor of television, but also as a pioneer in the fields of radar and fibre optics.

The inspiring tale of the Bairds is recounted here.
