A name of both ancient Celtic and Norman roots, ‘Agnew’ features prominently in the colourful drama that is Scotland’s frequently turbulent history.

Allied for centuries with the mighty Clan Donald, some bearers of the name today can boast a descent from Somerled, the twelfth century King of the Isles also known as the Summer Wanderer.

Others can trace a descent from the family of Agneax, or Aigneu, originally from the valley of the Viré in Normandy, who fought at the side of the victorious Duke William of Normandy in 1066 at the battle of Hastings and who much later adopted the form of ‘Agnew’ after being granted territories in Scotland by King David 1 in the twelfth century.

Chronicled here are the stirring lives and times of the Agnews of both yesteryear and today.
