With territories scattered throughout the diverse length and breadth of Scotland, the Hendersons figure significantly throughout the long centuries of the nation’s turbulent history.

They are to be found at the heart of dark conspiracies and heinous murders, although it was a Henderson who bravely fought to save the life of the MacDonald chieftain during the bloody Massacre of Glencoe.

It was also a Henderson minister of religion who helped to frame the revolutionary National Covenant.

Described as ‘the glorious marriage day of the kingdom with God’, the Covenant pledged to uphold the Presbyterian religion, and called for free parliaments and assemblies.

Signed at Edinburgh’s Greyfriars Church on February 28, 1638 by Scotland’s nobles, barons, burgesses and ministers, it was subscribed to the following day by hundreds of ordinary people.

Copies were made and dispatched around Scotland and signed by thousands more.
