With the proud motto of ‘To seek the truth’, the O’Sheas are particularly renowned as having been the most noted of The Ten Tribes of Kilkenny – but it is was in what is now the county of Kerry, in the ancient province of Munster, that they first stamped their mark on the pages of Ireland’s history.

In addition to fame, some of the name have also gained notoriety – in particular Kitty O’Shea, the married name of Katharine Wood, born in Essex in 1846, and whose romantic relationship with the Irish Protestant landowner and nationalist leader Charles Stewart Parnell led to a scandal that resulted in the destruction of the politician’s promising political career.
