A name whose roots lie deep in the ancient soil of the Emerald Isle, one point of origin of ‘Kennedy’ is from the Irish-Gaelic forenames Cinnéide and Ceannéidigh.

Frequently found on the bloody field of battle, they trace a proud descent from Brian Boru, or Brian Boruma, the celebrated Ard Rí Éireann, High King of Ireland, who inflicted a crushing defeat on invading Vikings at the battle of Clontarf in 1014.

One of their most famous sons was John Fitzgerald “Jack” Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, who paid a four-day state visit to the Irish Republic in June of 1963, only months before his assassination in Dallas.

In many ways it was a homecoming for the charismatic president, for it was from Ireland that his paternal great-grandfather had emigrated in the early years of the nineteenth century for a new life in America – laying the foundations for one of the nation’s greatest and wealthiest political dynasties.
