Two separate branches of the proud and ancient clan known as Ó Catháin, or Kane, flourished for centuries in different parts of the Emerald Isle.

But it was in the northern province of Ulster that, with bonds of kinship to the equally proud and powerful O’ Neill dynasty, that they stamped an indelible mark on Ireland’s colourful and turbulent history.

Many of the name have gained fame and distinction through a diverse range of endeavours and pursuits, with Helen Kane, born Helen Schroeder in 1903 in the Bronx, New York to a German father and an Irish mother, the singer best known for her hit I Wanna Be Loved By You.

It was her ‘boop-boop-a-boop’ singing style in the 1928 musical Good Boy that made her the inspiration for the popular animated character Betty Boop.

The poignant yet stirring tale of the Kanes is chronicled here.
