A name with a number of points of origin that include the Anglo-Saxon ‘Wod’, the name of a feared Germanic god of storm, ‘Wood’ has been present in the historical record from earliest times.

On the bloody field of battle, four of the name have been recipients of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valour in the face of enemy action for British and Commonwealth forces, while Alexander Wood was the Scottish physician credited with the invention in 1853 of the first hypodermic needle to use a syringe and hollow needle.

On the stage, Elijah Wood is the American actor best known for his role of Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, while Victoria Wood was the award-winning British comedienne, actress, singer and writer who first came to fame after winning a television talent show.
