Lang Syne English Family Information History Fact Book - Turner

A name with a number of pints of origin that include the occupational description for someone who worked with the ‘turning’ device known as a lathe, used to fashion cylindrical objects from wood, ‘Turner’ features prominently in the historical record.

On the bloody field of battle, the brothers Alexander and Victor Turner, born in Berkshire, were both First World War recipients of the Victoria Cross – the highest award for valour in the face of enemy action for British and Commonwealth forces, while in the world of medicine Dr Grey Turner, born in 1877, was the pioneering English surgeon whose early research into cancer anticipated the development of chemotherapy.

On American shores, Ted Turner is the entrepreneur who in 1980 founded the international media organisation Cable News Network (CNN) – and his life and times, along with those of other bearers of the Turner name, is recorded here.
