Lang Syne English Family Information History Fact Book - Reid

A name with roots that stretch back through the dim mists of time to England’s Anglo-Saxon past, ‘Reid’ features prominently in the colourful drama that is the historical record of not only the British Isles but also much further afield.

Through a range of endeavours and pursuits that include the battlefield, politics, music, the stage and literature, many of its bearers have gained high honours and distinction.

Born in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire in 1947, John Reid is the British Labour Party politician elevated to the House of Lords in 2010 as Baron Reid of Cardowan after having served in a number of high level ministerial posts that include Health Secretary, Defence Secretary and Home Secretary.

Away from politics, he served for a time as Chairman of Celtic Football Club.
