Settling on English shores in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066, bearers of the Percy name have featured prominently in the historical record from earliest times, with one family in particular achieving high honours and distinction that include the Dukedom of Northumberland.

One colourful bearer of the name was Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland, who served for a time in Parliament as the member for Buckingham and then Northumberland, where the Percy seat is Alnwick Castle.

Appointed Ambassador Extraordinary for the coronation in 1825 of Charles X of France, he funded his attendance at the glittering event out of his own very deep pockets.

One contemporary account of the coronation noted how he “astonished the continental nobility of the magnitude of his retinue, the gorgeousness of his equipage, and the profuseness of his liberality.”

Appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, he also held the same post for Northumberland from 1817 until his death in 1847.
