Proud bearers of a name that became widespread throughout the British Isles in the aftermath of the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 – a key event in the history of the island nation – but with much earlier roots, the Patons and their namesakes the Pattons have stamped an indelible mark on the historical record.

While some have gained distinction on the battlefield, others have achieved celebrity through a diverse range of endeavours and pursuits that include the battlefield, art and music to sport and as pioneering adventurers.

Two bearers of the name were recipients of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest award for valour in the face of enemy action for British and Commonwealth forces, while in more peaceful pursuits Joan Burton Paton was the leading Australian naturalist, environmentalist and ornithologist born in 1916.
