A name of both ancient Germanic and Gaelic-Irish roots – with the latter, in the form of ‘Mac an Bháird’, indicating ‘son of the bard’, or ‘son of the poet’ – ‘Ward’ is a name of illustrious heritage, with its bearers tracing a proud descent from the legendary Conal of the Victories, a first century A.D. chieftain of the celebrated band of warriors the Red Branch Knights.

In later centuries, three bearers of the name have been recipients of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valour in the face of enemy action for British and Commonwealth forces, while in music, Bill Ward is the Birmingham-born drummer who, along with Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Ozzy Osbourne, is a founding member of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath.

From earliest times to the present day, the stirring tale of the Wards is recounted here.
