In the form it has assumed today, the Fitzpatrick name holds an intriguing secret – one that when uncovered reveals how it is rooted deep in the ancient soil of Ireland.

Kings of ancient Ossory in the province of Leinster, their story is one of both glorious fortune and tragic misfortune – with many of them were among the thousands forced to seek a new life far from their native land during the famine known as The Great Hunger, caused by a failure of the potato crop between 1845 and 1849.

On a note of infamy, James Fitzpatrick, better known as the eighteenth century American highwayman Sandy Flash, was the son of Irish immigrants.

Pursuing a career as a highwayman, operating in Pennsylvania, and gaining a reputation as an eighteenth century Robin Hood, he finally faced the hangman’s noose in 1778.
