Although of ancient Anglo-Saxon roots, ‘Richardson’ was popularised as a surname throughout the British Isles in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066. With bearers of the name gaining distinction in a number of fields, they feature prominently in the historical record. Born in Yorkshire, Sir Owen Richardson was the British physicist who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1928 for his work on thermionic emission – the emission of electricity from hot bodies – and which became known as Richardson’s Law. Born in 1928 in Shipley, Yorkshire, Cecil Antonio Richardson was the award-winning theatre and film director and producer better known as Tony Richardson. The recipient of two Academy Awards – for Best Director and Best Picture for the 1963 Tom Jones, it was through his marriage to the actress Vanessa Redgrave, that he was the father of the actresses Natasha and Joely Richardson. The inspiring tale of the Richardsons is recounted here. Book Dimensions 10 × 0.4 × 14.5 cm
