Ranked 30th in some lists of the 100 most common surnames in the United Kingdom, it is perhaps not surprising that ‘Hill’ figures prominently in the historical record.

Born in Perth in 1802, David Octavius Hill was not only a noted Scottish artist, but also a pioneer of early photographic techniques, while Thomas Hill was the British mathematician credited with having invented the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system of proportional representation, first used in an election in Australia in 1840.

On the race track Graham Hill was the British racing driver who won the Formula One Championship in 1960 and 1968 – and his tale, along with those of other famous bearers of the name, can be found here.
